Learning Outcomes:
- Participants will be introduced to basic sustainability facts and figures.
Duration:
5 minutes
Materials needed:
- Prepared quiz questions (5-10 questions) on sustainability topics.
Preparation
Materials needed: prepare 5-10 quiz questions, either multiple-choice or true/false, related to basic sustainability facts (e.g., “How much water is saved by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth?” or “True or False: Glass can be recycled indefinitely”).
Technology: if the session is online, set up the quiz on a digital platform like Kahoot or Google Forms for quick participation. For in-person sessions, create answer sheets or allow verbal responses.
Setup: ensure the space allows for easy participation (e.g. Arrange seating or a space where everyone can participate comfortably). For digital quizzes, ensure all participants can access the quiz via their phones or laptops.
Description
This quick quiz introduces or reinforces sustainability concepts in a fun and competitive format. Participants will answer a series of sustainability-related questions, either on paper or using an online tool. The quiz can be done individually or in small teams. After the quiz, the trainer reviews the correct answers, providing additional explanations where needed and inviting participants to reflect on surprising or challenging questions.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Explain the rules of the quiz and how participants should respond (verbally, on paper, or via an online tool).
- Ask each question and allow a short time for participants to respond.
- Once all questions are answered, review the correct answers with the group, discussing why each answer is correct.
Encourage participants to share which facts surprised them or how the information applies to their daily lives.
Debriefing
After going through the quiz answers, ask participants which facts surprised them and how these sustainability issues impact their lives.
Tips
Keep the tone light and playful to ensure high energy and engagement.
Use humor and positive reinforcement when reviewing answers, especially if participants struggle with certain questions.
After the quiz, ask follow-up questions to deepen understanding. For example, “What changes could you make in your daily life based on what you learned today?”
Be flexible with the format: If time is short, reduce the number of questions; if the group is large, divide participants into teams for more interaction.
Handouts and resources
The trainer(s) can use these handouts for the session or create their own, as long as the same basic concepts are included (Sustainability facts).
